about

Foreword by Victor Wooten
(bass legend, Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, SMV, recipient of 5 Grammy Awards, 3 times Bass Player of the Year by Bass Player magazine)

"I’ve been a fan of Michael Pipoquinha ever since I first became aware of him more than a decade ago. He was just a child but was already an amazing bassist back then. Now he has blossomed into a wonderful world-class musician. On this new album, I find myself, again, blown away as Michael proves himself to also be a talented composer. I have the utmost love and admiration for this young man.
I look forward to seeing where he takes us next.”

Liner notes by Scott Devine

I first heard of Michael Pipoquinha over a decade ago via a random video I found on YouTube. It was immediately apparent how musically developed he was, and at such an incredibly young age (i think Michael was only 11 years old at the time!). He had such an effortless and virtuosic command of his instrument, but he also displayed a maturity that you’d usually only expect from a seasoned pro.

As someone who’d continue to follow his career from the sidelines, it was a real honor when I was asked to write the liner notes for this release.

Um Novo Tom marks something of a milestone in Michael’s artistic process and is the sort of album that should get bigger bass names quaking in their boots. A bracing blast of freshly spun music from a dynamic emerging artist, Michael conjures up a melting pot of sounds that are at once as lush and vibrant as they are deeply funky. His bass work is delivered with incredible precision, along with some delicious fretless playing too.

The veritable avalanche of compositional ideas are given a rocket-fuelled edge thanks to the presence of some of the slickest Brazilian musicians of a generation. Yet for all its multi-layered conceptual brilliance, Um Novo Tom has a natural flow and an unbridled energy that results in a really contemporary musical vision. All of which bodes well for the next chapter in Michael’s career.

It takes a lot to stand out from the crowds of highly accomplished young bassists emerging today, and a sure way to do it is through establishing your own musical landscape. Perhaps this was Michael’s intention. This is a truly awesome album that serves as an amazing snapshot of a fast-developing world-class artist in the ascendant. His musicality, bass playing and passion for music is a force to be reckoned with. Michael is a legend in the making.

Michael Pipoquinha’s upcoming release Um Novo Tom (“A New Shade/Tone/Key” or simply “Tom”, after Michael’s youngest son Antônio) is a bold step further in his musical journey. The new compositions, arrangements and sound aesthetics show that, well beyond his virtuoso bass chops and his mastery of the Brazilian traditional styles and rhythms, Michael Pipoquinha is very much aware of what’s going on in the international contemporary jazz scene and that he has his own say in this golden era of musical eclecticism.

Surrounded by some of the highest-profile Brazilian musicians of the current generation, the bass genius departs from his previous more conservative work to embrace cutting-edge contemporary musical approaches. Frantic melodies, adventurous rhythms, rich harmonic landscapes and fearless sonic choices reminiscent of nu-jazz and lo-fi hip hop place Michael Pipoquinha up there next to admired contemporary artists such as James Francies, Kamasi Washington, Ben Wendel, Robert Glasper or Thundercat.
